Custom Surgical Joins ForNeRo Project, which Receives 2 Million Euros in Government Funding

Custom Surgical proudly announces its significant participation in the pioneering ForNeRo research network. Conceptualized by Prof. Dr. Klaus Bengler, PD Dr.-Ing. med. M. Ali Nasseri, and Dr.-Ing. Manuel Ferle, ForNeRo represents a collaborative endeavor. This initiative involves The Technical University of Munich (TUM), Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg as key research institutions.

Concurrently, five innovative companies, including Karl Storz - Venture One, ITK Engineering GmbH, ImFusion GmbH, AKTORmed GmbH, and Custom Surgical GmbH, serve as industrial partners in the network.

The research primarily focuses on the ergonomics and the enhancement of robotic systems to improve surgical outcomes across various medical specialties. The German government has acknowledged the importance of this project, granting 2 million euros in funding to facilitate its advancement.

The ForNeRo Project is at the forefront of innovation, seeking to address the increasing technical, social, and organizational complexities associated with the introduction of robotic assistance systems. These systems play a crucial role in modern medicine, and their integration poses challenges that the ForNeRo consortium is dedicated to overcoming.

Custom Surgical will assume a pivotal role in the ForNeRo Project, spearheading the tasks of imaging-data capture and analysis. This crucial responsibility echoes Custom Surgical’s dedication to democratizing healthcare access through the development of affordable and innovative medical imaging solutions.

The project aims to enhance the integration of robotic systems, prioritizing considerations such as ergonomics and employing cutting-edge technologies like simulations, augmented reality, and machine learning.

The development of specific methods, including computer vision and visualization concepts, will facilitate the efficient placement of robots in operating rooms at a more affordable price. These approaches are designed to improve acceptance among healthcare professionals and patients while monitoring systems will be implemented to alert them to potential workflow disruptions.

The 2 million euros in government funding was received yesterday in a Quick Off event with the State Minister for Science and Arts Markus Blume. This financial support will play a vital role in advancing research and development efforts, allowing the consortium to bring their innovative solutions to fruition.
